Refereeing Age Grade School Rugby

    This half-day course is aimed at teachers who have to referee their own teams or other matches within their school. It will clarify Rules at each year group, but also illustrate the vital role of the referee in maintaining a safe environment and allowing a free-flowing game.  Particular attention will be paid to the contact areas and the management of parents on the touchline.

    • Understanding the developmental Rules framework
    • Managing the contact areas safely and confidently
    • Refereeing the scrum at all levels
    • Exploiting communication and advantage
    • Tackle and rucks: use the laws and NROP to create a safe and flowing game
    • Referee presence: voice/whistle/body language/signals
    • Managing the game, the players and the parents

    Dan Cottrell

    Dan has been coaching rugby in schools, clubs, and at representative level for over 30 years. He is head coach of Bristol Schools U18s and centre manager for the Bristol Bears Junior Academy. He is editor of Rugby Coach Weekly, which has been running since 2003 and has a worldwide following. He played first-class rugby for Bristol and Bath and was director of rugby at Cranleigh.
